Soft light, or diffused light, is the light you see on a cloudy day. The light softens and the bright areas even out and donít leave many shadows. The intensity (brightness) of this light is fairly low. This kind of light is best for portraits. Diffused light is good for portraits because it reduces skin blemishes, evens out and softens skin tone and generally looks a lot nicer. Light also has a temperature. Youíll see this in the form of colour. Have you ever noticed on some days the light looks a little bluer than other times? And have you ever noticed that at around dusk the light looks orange and yellow? This is commonly known as temperature, or hue. This phenomenon occurs because the sun shifting across the sky at different times will bring differences in colour temperature.

The direction in which your light is coming from is very important. The direction of light will dictate whether you have shadows under the nose or not. This can make or break an image and you will feel pleased or disappointed with the results depending on where the shadows fall.

If you find that you still have too much shadow on the opposite side to the window, then try using a reflector. A reflector can bounce the light back onto the persons face to fill in the shadows. This works very well in some situations.

If you place your subject too close to the window you may see more contrast on the persons face. If you want softer light and less shadows, move them away from the window. This will even out the light across their face, but darken the overall exposure of the image. Simply adjust this by increasing your ISO.

When shooting a portrait using window light think about the emotion that the light has on the overall image. A nice, diffused window light can often create an endearing affect. This works really well for weddings especially. Alternatively if you want to create something dramatic, try a different direction and quality of light. You might try side lighting instead. Thatís another topic for another time.

Window light is a great light source for portraits if you have no other professional lighting set up. Find the right position before shooting, and then employ the use of a good tripod. Before you press the shutter button carefully examine the quality, contrast, temperature and direction of this light. In Japan preparing for college is taken very seriously, and there is little time for play. Table tennis is a good choice for relaxation because you can compress a lot of activity chasing a ball into a short amount of time and smashing a table-tennis ball can be very satisfying after a long period of studying. When you play table tennis, you quickly learn to adapt your game to the conditions in which you play. If there's not much room around the table, you have to be prepared to lunge across the table rather than fall back or sideways to gain time to respond to an opponent's shot. If the ceiling is low, you have to get to the ball before it caroms crazily off that obstacle. If the table has quirky spots that affect how the ball bounces, you plan your ready position and shots to take those potential bounces into .
